Not many people enjoy going to the dentist, especially if it is a case of emergency dentistry due to some sort of accident or other factor. Accidents and other true dental emergency situations can’t always be avoided, but there are some ways to handle them until you can get to the dentist office.

Prevention Is the Best Policy

Sometimes it is possible to prevent or at least lessen the severity of some trips to the dentist. One example is in sporting activities. If you or your children regularly play sports, everyone should wear the special mouth guards made to protect teeth in these situations.

Another way to protect your teeth is by avoiding activities such as chewing on hard things like ice, frozen solid treats, hard candy, hard nuts, etc. You should also not use your teeth to open things or try to get the top off a bottle.

To prevent potential badly infected teeth or large cavities, make sure you brush and floss on a regular basis. This will go a long way from keeping you out of the dentist chair for any condition that got to the emergency stages due to lack of proper hygiene.

Unpreventable Events

Of course, you can’t predict or prevent a true dental emergency such as a tooth being knocked out, a car accident that causes a dental issue, swelling in the mouth that happens suddenly, or sudden trouble swallowing and so forth.

If you should suffer one of these true emergency dentistry issues, there are things you can do to help as you head to the dentist office. For example, if you or someone else has a tooth knocked out, you need to get to the dentist within about 30 minutes to save it. One method of keeping the tooth good on the way is to either try to put it back inside the mouth (unless there is a possibility of swallowing it) or placing the tooth in milk or a saline solution and keeping it there until you get to the dentist.

Non Emergency Events
Many patients who present themselves to the dentist’s emergency room aren’t really experiencing emergencies at all. If you have had a toothache and it wasn’t caused by a sudden accident, but you suddenly decided it hurt too much, that may not be a true dental emergency. It’s best to call the dentist in the morning and describe the situation so he can get you into the office as soon as possible. A true case of emergency dentistry is a sudden event that couldn’t have been avoided.
